"From the common man to Art Brut: Primitivism in its worst light in the oeuvre of Jean Dubuffet from 1944 thru 1951" Thesis defense by Baptiste Brun

We take pleasure in announcing Baptiste Brun's (a member of the CrAB collective think tank and a teacher at the Ecole du Louvre) thesis defense next Tuesday, June 25, at the National Institute for the Study of Art, at 1:30pm (INHA, Paris, 2 rue Vivienne, Room G. Vasari, 1st floor above ground floor). His presentation is open to the public.
The study presented by Baptiste Brun — "From the common man to Art Brut: Primitivism in its worst light in the oeuvre of Jean Dubuffet from 1944 thru 1951" — highlights the relations between Jean Dubuffet's work and the primitivist paradigm during the immediate post-war period. To do so, Mr. Brun considers Dubuffet's oeuvre as a whole (his paintings, writings, and Art Brut canvassing) in correlation with the oeuvre of his contemporaries (Bachelard, Bataille, Ponge, ethnological practices of the day, etc). The criticism of primitivism at the time, which Dubuffet himself carried out, entailed due consideration of the critical efficiency of the contemporaneous Art Brut reviews.This research project, directed by Thierry Dufrêne (Paris-Ouest Nanterre), also falls under the aegis of a thesis for the Ecole du Louvre. Composing the jury for this thesis are Laurence Bertrand-Dorléac (Science Po), Daniel Fabre (EHESS), Dominique Jarrassé (Bordeaux 2 - Ecole du Louvre) et Daniel J. Sherman (Chapel Hill, North Carolina).
