A poetic labyrinth by Armand Schulthess - an exhibition at the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel

Neuchâtel's Dürrenmatt Center presents The Poetic Labyrinth of Armand Schulthess, its third and last exhibition in the labyrinth series.

In collaboration with the Collection de L’Art Brut, the Dürrenmatt Center decided to highlight the labyrinthine poetics of this extraordinary creator who worked outside the beaten path and was little recognized during his lifetime.

A federal employee, for many years Armand Schulthess (1901-1972) led a routine life, creating no ripples.  His superior qualified him as "retiring, silent and humble...[who] accomplishes his tasks conscientiously." Still and all, at the age of 50 this office clerk suddenly cut himself loose, abandoning his professional ties to the Department of Public Economy and leaving Bern to settle on a private property of his own in the Ticino—a chestnut grove in Auressio. Here, in a self-sustaining fashion, he lived out an exile that was as geographic as it was social and mental. For over twenty years, until his death in 1972,  he devoted himself heart and soul to carrying out a utopian project attesting to his artistic and philosophic obsessions.
