Centennial of the Palais Idéal, the fantastic dream palace by Facteur Cheval - September 4 through September 30, 2012
To commemorate the centennial of Facteur [mailman] Cheval's Palais Idéal in France, the Collection de l'Art Brut is mounting an exhibition of photographs and film screenings. During the "Nuit des musées" (Museum Night) on September 22, 2012, visitors will be treated to a guided tour in sign language, together with several creative workshops where a palace is to be built; the completed construction will be lit up with 100 candles, in the presence of the director of Facteur Cheval's Palais Idéal, Marie-José Georges.

Brut is pleased to present a show of recent color photographs signed by
Michel Guillemot and capturing the Palais Idéal. These will be completed
by archival photographs in which Facteur Cheval proudly stages himself
in the midst of the world of his creation. Charles Soubeyran, author of
the Révoltés du merveilleux (2004), addresses this same theme in a text available to the public.
The Palais Idéal is an Art Brut environment located in Hauterives, in France's department of the Drôme. Its creator is Ferdinand Cheval, a mailman active from 1879 to 1912. During this 33-year long period, the self-taught architect devoted 10,000 days to erecting an imposing construction 26 meters (85 feet) long by 11 meters (33 feet) high. In 1969, his Palais Idéal was classed as a National Monument.
