"Besoin Modeste assiette plate" (literally: humble need flat plate) - a show based on the writings of Samuel Daiber

Saturday November 8, at 8pm
Besoin modeste assiette plate is a musical monologue based on the writings of Samuel Ernest Daiber (1901-1983)—a creator interned in various psychiatric establishments in French-speaking Switzerland over many long years. The Collection de l’Art Brut has several of his letters in safekeeping.

While hospitalized, yet in a stabilized state of health, Samuel Daiber refused to work. Instead, he spent his time writing letters to the medical personnel, the establishment's directors, members of his own family or totally imaginary addressees. His confinement weighed heavily on him and he endlessly requested to be released. He nonetheless remained interned until the year of his death (1983).

This show explores the various layers, loopholes, and strong impact of Daiber's words. A musical performance by KARST — a quartet that features free improvisation and sound poetry— intermingles voices, objects and instruments to produce a soundscape one can imagine has been carved by corrosion: jagged and gnawed away by underground cavities, where thousands of paths open up to those who dare to listen.
